Trigger an Inciting Incident

I'm writing my novel now and I'm using an 8 point plot as my template to build this novel. I started my first chapter, but somehow skipped a chapter and found myself in Chapter 3 the home of the inciting incident. So I am going to step back read a little Walter Mosely maybe some James Patterson to see what am I doing wrong in Chapter 2 before I run out of juice or time.
